Holy Detour: That Time I Tried to Be God’s GPS

Have you ever tried to “help” God with His plan for your life? You know, just casually suggesting that maybe He missed your exit?

Yeah. Same here.

It all started with a prayer. One of those dramatic, full-of-faith, arms-raised-to-the-heavens prayers that sounded like I was auditioning for a role in a spiritual soap opera.

“Lord, I surrender! Your will be done! Wherever You lead me, I will follow!”

Cut to: two weeks later.

I’m sitting in traffic behind a tractor doing exactly 17 miles per hour on a road I didn’t even know existed, late to a job interview for a position I didn’t want, questioning everything from my career choices to my last haircut. Apparently, God’s “wherever” wasn’t as glamorous as I had hoped. There were no burning bushes, no angels delivering job offers, not even a gentle dove flying overhead—just the slow crawl of country traffic and a growing suspicion that I had taken a wrong turn in more ways than one.

I checked my phone’s GPS. Recalculating.

I checked my heart. Recalculating.

I prayed again, but this time it was less “thy will be done” and more “um, hello? Did You forget about me back here?!”

And that’s when I felt it—the gentle whisper, not in the wind, not through the clouds, but in my own slightly panicked soul:

“I didn’t forget. You just thought you were driving.”

Touché, Lord.

The Spiritual Lesson:

Sometimes, we treat God like He’s our GPS assistant. We want Him to give us the shortest, fastest, most scenic route to success, happiness, and maybe a lakeside view with a hammock.

But faith isn’t about efficiency.

It’s about trust.

God’s not in the business of optimizing your schedule—He’s in the business of transforming your heart. And sometimes, that transformation comes with detours, construction zones, and even long waits behind slow-moving tractors.

We may think we’re lost, but in God’s plan, delays are often divine appointments in disguise. That road you didn’t want to take? It may just be the one that leads to peace, perspective, and purpose.

Final Thought:

Next time you feel lost, confused, or just really annoyed by your current season, don’t panic. Don’t wrestle the steering wheel away from God. Just lean back, enjoy the scenic route, and maybe bring snacks.

Because when God’s driving, it’s always the right way—even when it feels like a wrong turn.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”
– Proverbs 3:5-6
