For much of my life, I thought being liked by everyone was the goal. I chased the idea of popularity, wanting to fit in and avoid conflict. But eventually I realized something important, the most popular people in the world also carry the heaviest weight of criticism and hatred. If you want to live in the public eye, you need a thick skin. And if you want to live for Christ, you need an even thicker one.
Jesus never promised us a comfortable life where everyone applauds our choices. In fact, He promised the opposite:
“If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first.” — John 15:18
“Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.” — Matthew 5:11
Standing for truth will always come with a cost. The culture may label you intolerant. Friends might turn their backs. The world will try to silence your voice. But if you never face resistance, maybe you’re not standing boldly enough.
We are not called to blend into the shadows. We are called to be the light in the darkness. And light exposes what darkness wants to hide.
That’s why Jesus also told us:
“In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” — John 16:33
Yes, the shadow of evil and hate is real. But so is the victory of Christ. He didn’t retreat when the world mocked Him, He pressed forward. He didn’t avoid confrontation when truth was on the line, He spoke boldly. And He didn’t let hate silence Him, He let love conquer through the cross.
So, if you find yourself being mocked, misunderstood, or even hated for doing what’s right, take it as confirmation you’re on the right path. As Christians, we are not called to win a popularity contest. We are called to stand firm in truth, even when the cost is high, because our reward is eternal.
The world doesn’t need more people chasing approval, it needs more believers willing to hold the line.
