It Only Takes One

Sometimes we convince ourselves that success requires everyone to notice us. Thousands of readers. Thousands of followers. A packed auditorium. A viral post. A massive audience. But maybe it doesn’t. Maybe it only takes one.

One person can hear you speak and recognize something in you that nobody else noticed. One person can read something you wrote and send it to someone who needs to see it. One person can hear your music, see your artwork, discover your photography, watch your performance, encounter your business idea, or simply shake your hand and walk away thinking, There is something here.

And that one person can change everything.

You Don’t Know Who Number 8,001 Will Be

Imagine 8,000 people reading something you wrote. Some enjoy it. Some share it. Some think about it for a few minutes and continue with their day. Nothing dramatic happens. Then reader number 8,001 arrives. Maybe that person has a platform you don’t have. Maybe they organize conferences. Maybe they work in publishing. Maybe they know someone looking for exactly what you have to offer. Maybe they simply share your work with one other person, and that person changes the trajectory of your life.

The important thing is that when you published what you created, you had absolutely no way of knowing which reader would matter. Number 8,001 looked exactly like number 8,000 until something happened. That’s why numbers can sometimes deceive us.

We look at views, followers, likes, sales, attendance, downloads, and engagement and decide whether something is working. But numbers measure activity. They don’t always measure possibility.

Everyone Is Connected to Someone

We rarely know the reach of the people standing in front of us. The person sitting quietly in the back of the room may know someone who books speakers. The person reading your article during lunch may know an editor. The person listening to your music may have a friend looking for exactly your sound. The person looking at your artwork may know someone searching for an artist. The person you casually meet over coffee may know someone who can open a door you didn’t even know existed.

That’s the strange thing about human connection. We see the person. We don’t see everyone connected to the person. Sometimes the individual who changes your life isn’t even the person who initially discovers you. They are simply the next person in the chain.

One share can travel farther than you ever could. One introduction can cross a distance you could never cross yourself. One conversation can create another conversation that you never even know happened.

The Hard Part Is Continuing to Show Up

This is where many people stop. They write for a while, and nobody notices. They create artwork and nobody buys it. They play music and the room isn’t full. They start a business and customers don’t immediately appear. They speak to small audiences. They submit manuscripts that get rejected. They apply for opportunities and hear nothing. Eventually they begin asking the question almost everyone asks: What’s the point?

The point is that you don’t know who comes next. If the person who could change everything is number 8,001, quitting at 8,000 guarantees you will never meet them. You don’t have to know when the opportunity is coming. You simply have to remain available for it.

Keep creating. Keep writing. Keep speaking. Keep painting. Keep playing. Keep building. Keep introducing yourself. Keep showing up. Not because success is guaranteed, but because possibility requires participation.

You Don’t Need Everyone

There is tremendous freedom in realizing that the whole world doesn’t have to approve of what you are doing. Everyone doesn’t have to understand your vision. Everyone doesn’t have to buy your book. Everyone doesn’t have to listen to your music. Everyone doesn’t have to appreciate your art. Everyone doesn’t have to believe in your idea.

You may not need everyone. You may only need one. One person who understands. One person who believes in what you are doing. One person who recognizes an opportunity. One person willing to make an introduction. One person willing to share what you created. One person who happens to be standing in exactly the right place at exactly the right time. And somewhere along the way, you may also discover something even more important: sometimes you are the one for somebody else.

Your encouragement may be the reason someone keeps going. Your introduction may open someone else’s door. Your decision to share someone’s work may put it in front of the person they could never reach themselves. Your words may reach someone on exactly the day they needed to hear them. We spend so much time wondering when our one person will arrive that we sometimes forget we have the ability to become that person for someone else.

Stay Available

There are no guarantees about which opportunity will work, which connection will matter, or which creation will finally reach the right person. That’s part of the uncertainty of life. But there is one thing we can control. We can remain in the game. We can continue putting something meaningful into the world. We can keep creating opportunities for people to discover what we have to offer.

Maybe hundreds of people have already passed you by. Maybe thousands have. Maybe you’ve been creating, working, praying, trying, and wondering whether any of it is going anywhere. Don’t assume silence means nothing is happening. You don’t know who the next person will be. You don’t know who they know. You don’t know what conversation your work might start when you aren’t in the room. And you don’t know how close you may already be.

You don’t need the entire world to notice you. Sometimes…

It only takes one.
