Finding Peace Between the Storms

Someone once shared a piece of wisdom that had been passed down from his father: “You are either heading into a storm, currently in a storm, or coming out of a storm.” At first, that sounds discouraging. But the more you think about it, the more you realize how accurately it describes life.

Every person experiences seasons of uncertainty. Some seasons are filled with joy and success. Some are filled with challenges and questions. Some bring unexpected blessings, while others bring difficulties, we never saw coming.

But life is always moving. We climb. We descend. We cross valleys. We begin another climb. That is simply the nature of the journey. The problem is that we often believe peace will come when we finally reach the place where everything is settled. We imagine there will be a moment when every question has been answered, every problem has been resolved, and every uncertainty has disappeared.

But that moment rarely comes. Even the highest mountains eventually lead to another path.

The Peaks and Valleys of Life

The peaks of life are incredible places. From the top of a mountain, the view is clear. We can look back and see how far we have traveled. We can appreciate the beauty around us and recognize moments of accomplishment. But peaks are narrow. They are places we visit, not places where we stay.

If we are going to continue moving forward, eventually the path leads downward. The valleys are different. They are wider. They often feel longer. The view is not as clear because the surrounding mountains block our perspective. But valleys are not signs that we have failed. They are part of the journey. Some of the greatest growth in life happens there.

The Pieces We Cannot See

Life is like a jigsaw puzzle. The difference is that we are not given the picture on the box. We only receive pieces. Some pieces are easy to understand. Others seem completely out of place. We may look at a difficult season and wonder why it is part of our story. Why did that opportunity disappear? Why did that relationship change? Why did that setback happen? Why am I still waiting? But a single puzzle piece cannot reveal the entire picture.

Only when the pieces come together can we understand how they connect. The same is true in life. What appears to be a setback today may become preparation for tomorrow. What feels like a closed door may eventually reveal protection. What seems like a meaningless moment may become an important part of the person we are becoming.

We see individual pieces. God sees the finished picture.

The Weight of Tomorrow

So much of our worry comes from trying to carry things we were never meant to carry. We carry the past, even though we cannot change it. We carry the future, even though we cannot control it. We spend hours replaying what has already happened or imagining what might happen next.

Jesus reminded us not to worry about tomorrow because tomorrow will have its own concerns. Each day has enough trouble of its own. That does not mean we should stop planning or preparing. It means we should not allow an unseen future to steal the peace available today. The future is unknown because it has not happened yet.

And sometimes that uncertainty is exactly what allows us to move forward. If we knew every challenge ahead, every disappointment we would face, and every difficult season we would encounter, we might never take the steps that lead us to growth.

The Sun Will Rise Again

Every night, the sun disappears below the horizon. Darkness comes. But we do not believe the sun has vanished forever. We understand that night is temporary. We trust that morning will come. Yet when darkness enters our own lives, we often forget the same truth. A difficult season feels permanent. A storm feels like it will never end. A valley feels like it has no way out. But storms pass. Valleys end. Morning comes.

The peace we seek does not come from knowing exactly what tomorrow holds. If it did, none of us would ever have peace, because life will always contain unanswered questions. Peace comes from knowing that we are not walking through uncertainty alone. The same God, who was faithful yesterday, is already present in tomorrow.

We may not understand every piece. We may not see the entire path. We may not know when the next storm will arrive or when the next mountain will appear. But we can trust that the story is not finished. And when tomorrow comes, the sun will rise again.

Life is filled with seasons of uncertainty, change, and transformation. The choices we make during those seasons shape who we become and how we impact the world around us.
