Every year, millions of people participate in a strange ritual. We adjust the clocks.
For some, it is a welcome change. More sunlight in the evening means more time outside, more activities after work, and more opportunity to enjoy the day. For others, it is frustrating. The changing clock disrupts sleep, creates confusion, and moves us further away from the natural rhythm of the world around us.
Now there is an ongoing debate: Should we make daylight saving time permanent? Or should we return to permanent standard time? At first, it seems like a simple preference. Morning people prefer one. Evening people prefer the other.
But the deeper question is much more important: What should determine time, the clock we created, or the world we live in?
The Original Clock Was the Sun
Before watches, smartphones, and atomic clocks, humanity looked upward. The sun marked the day. Morning began when the sun rose. Midday came when the sun reached its highest point. Night arrived when the sun disappeared.
A sundial does not ask what time we would prefer. It simply measures reality.

The argument for permanent daylight saving time is not unreasonable. Many people enjoy having more daylight after work. A later sunset can provide:
- more opportunities for outdoor exercise,
- more time with family,
- increased recreation,
- more daylight for businesses,
- a greater feeling that the day has not ended when work is finished.
For people who spend their days indoors, arriving home while the sun is still shining can feel like gaining extra time. And there is truth to that. Sunlight affects mood.
Activity affects health. Social connection matters. The appeal of daylight saving time is understandable. But there is a question we have to ask:
What are we gaining in the evening, and what are we sacrificing in the morning?
Our Bodies Do Not Run on Clock Time
Human beings have a built-in clock. It is called the circadian rhythm. This internal system regulates:
- sleep,
- wakefulness,
- hormones,
- metabolism,
- energy levels,
- mental alertness.
And the strongest signal controlling that rhythm is light. Not the numbers on a clock. Light. Morning sunlight tells the body: “The day has begun.” Darkness tells the body: “The day is ending.”
This is why many sleep researchers favor permanent standard time. It better aligns human biology with the natural cycle of daylight. Permanent standard time provides:
- earlier morning sunlight,
- better synchronization with the body’s internal clock,
- easier waking,
- healthier sleep patterns,
- less disruption between natural time and social time.
The Hidden Cost of Permanent Daylight Saving Time
Permanent daylight saving time sounds appealing because it gives us something we value: more evening light. But the sun does not actually change. We only change the label.
A winter sunrise that naturally occurs at 7 a.m. does not become an 8 a.m. sunrise because we moved the hands on a clock. The result is that many people would begin their day in darkness.
Children would wait for buses before sunrise. Workers would commute before sunrise.
Many people would wake up and begin their responsibilities before their bodies had received the natural signal that morning had arrived.
The problem is not that humans cannot adapt. The problem is that we are creating a permanent mismatch between the clock on the wall and the clock inside our bodies.
Health Is More Important Than Convenience
One of the strongest arguments for permanent standard time is that it prioritizes something we often overlook, health. Modern society already pushes people toward:
- later nights,
- artificial light,
- inconsistent sleep,
- constant activity.
A permanent daylight saving system would encourage extending the evening even further. The question becomes, are we adding quality time to our lives, or are we simply pushing the natural end of the day later? There is a difference.
More hours on a clock do not necessarily mean more rest, more health, or more life.
But Isn’t More Daylight Better?
Yes. The question is not whether sunlight is good. It is. The question is when that sunlight is most beneficial. Evening sunlight may help people stay active. Morning sunlight helps set the entire biological system. The beginning of the day influences the rest of the day.
A strong foundation matters.
The Human Desire to Control Time
Perhaps the most interesting part of this debate is what it reveals about us. Human beings have always tried to improve their circumstances. Sometimes that is good. We build homes. We create medicine. We develop technology.
But there is a difference between using wisdom to work within natural boundaries and believing we can redefine those boundaries whenever they become inconvenient.
We can change a clock. But we cannot change the sun. We can rename an hour. But we cannot change the movement of the Earth.
So What Time Should We Keep?
If the goal is convenience, permanent daylight saving time has understandable appeal. If the goal is maximizing evening activities, daylight saving time offers advantages.
But if the goal is aligning human beings with the natural rhythm of the world, permanent standard time is the better answer. Standard time recognizes something important: The clock was created to reflect reality. Reality was not created to follow the clock.
Maybe the wisest choice is not always the one that gives us the most convenience. Maybe it is the one that keeps us closest to the design that was already there.
